When do I need an ISAE 3402 report as a service organisation?
You need an ISAE 3402 report as soon as your services can have a direct impact on your clients’ financial reporting. Think of payroll processing, financial administration, invoicing or managing sub-ledgers. Often you notice it of your own accord: clients and their accountant increasingly ask about your internal control, or they include having an ISAE 3402 report as a requirement in contracts and tenders.
What is the difference between ISAE 3402 Type I and Type II?
With a Type I report the auditor assesses, on a single reference date, whether your internal control is appropriately designed for the processes described. That is a good first step if you have no ISAE 3402 history yet. With Type II the auditor goes a step further: alongside the design, the operating effectiveness of the controls is also tested over a longer period (usually 6 to 12 months). That shows that your control is genuinely applied consistently in practice.
How does an ISAE 3402 report help with questions from my client's accountant?
Your client’s accountant has to assess whether the outsourced processes create any unwanted risks for the annual accounts. With an ISAE 3402 report he or she gets a structured insight into your organisation, processes and controls. In most cases the accountant can rely on this instead of carrying out additional work at your premises. That saves time on both sides and reduces the risk of discussions about responsibilities and residual risks.
Is ISAE 3402 only relevant for large organisations?
No. SME service organisations increasingly benefit from an ISAE 3402 report too. Precisely when you carry out the same processes for several clients, a central report prevents every client and accountant from having to carry out in-depth investigations separately. For you that means economies of scale; for your clients and their accountants it gives confidence that your internal control is organised at a professional level.
How does ISAE 3402 relate to ISO 27001 or other standards?
ISAE 3402 focuses specifically on the internal control around outsourced processes that are relevant to financial reporting. ISO 27001, by contrast, is about your information security management system as a whole. Many organisations combine the two: ISO 27001 as the basis for information security, and ISAE 3402 as the assurance report towards clients and their accountants on the reliability of specific processes. Which mix makes sense depends on your services and the requirements of your clients.
How much time does an ISAE 3402 process take for my organisation?
The lead time depends on your starting point, the scope you choose and whether you want to go straight to a Type II report. Count on a number of workshops, time to describe processes and controls, and the collection of evidence. We set up the process so that it fits your organisation: pragmatic, with clear priorities and as little disruption to day-to-day operations as possible, but with a sound end result that you and your clients can build on.
