As an SME IT service provider, do I really need a SOC 2 report?
That depends on your clients and your growth plans. If you work for larger organisations, international parties or clients in heavily regulated sectors, you will see that SOC 2 is increasingly becoming a hard requirement in RFPs and vendor assessments. Even when it is not (yet) a mandatory box to tick, a SOC 2 report can make the difference in a tender or when selling your business. See it as a mark of quality that shows you handle client data securely and professionally.
What is the difference between SOC 2 Type I and Type II?
With SOC 2 Type I we assess, on a single reference date, whether the design of your processes and controls meets the standard. That is a good first step if you are just starting with SOC 2 or want to show quickly that you have the basics in order. SOC 2 Type II goes further: we test not only the design, but also the operating effectiveness of your measures over a longer period (usually 6 to 12 months). That shows that your control is not only correct on paper, but genuinely works in practice.
Is SOC 2 only relevant for the US, or for my Dutch clients too?
SOC 2 originated in the United States, but is now used worldwide as a standard for IT service providers. Larger Dutch companies are asking for it more and more often too, certainly when you are an important link in their digital chain. Do you still mainly have Dutch clients, but want to grow internationally? Then a SOC 2 report helps you open up access to that market.
Do I need both ISO 27001 and SOC 2, or is one of the two enough?
ISO 27001 and SOC 2 both focus on information security, but they have a different purpose and a different form. ISO 27001 is a standard for your management system, usually concluded with a certificate. SOC 2 is an assurance report in which an auditor assesses your measures and processes on behalf of the user organisations. Many IT service providers combine the two: ISO 27001 as the basis for their ISMS and SOC 2 as the report they actively share with (international) clients. Which combination makes sense for you depends on your clients and your sector.
How much time does a SOC 2 process take for my organisation?
Count on having to free up internal time for a number of workshops, for supplying information and for improving or documenting processes. Exactly how much time that takes depends on your starting point: organisations with already mature ISO 27001 or ISAE 3402 control are finished sooner than parties that have set up little in a structured way. Our starting point is always pragmatic: we design the process so that it fits your size and your available capacity. We prevent it from becoming a second full-time project alongside your day-to-day operations.
