What exactly is the difference between SOC 2 and SOC 3?

SOC 2 is a detailed audit report for a limited audience, such as security specialists, risk managers and auditors. It contains extensive descriptions of your system, controls and test results. SOC 3 is a summarised, publicly shareable version based on the same audit, without technical details. You use SOC 2 for in-depth due diligence with selected parties, and SOC 3 to radiate confidence widely across the market.

Do I always need a SOC 2 report in order to get a SOC 3?

Yes. A SOC 3 is not a stand-alone audit, but a summary of a SOC 2 Type II report. The underlying testing of controls therefore always takes place in the SOC 2 process. On that basis the auditor can then draw up a SOC 3 report that is suitable for general use.

Why would I want a SOC 3 report alongside SOC 2?

With SOC 2 you mainly serve a limited group of stakeholders who need detail. SOC 3 is for a wider audience, and you share no sensitive information. That makes SOC 3 extremely suitable as a marketing and communication tool: you show that you take security and reliability seriously, backed by an independent audit, but in language and a form that everyone can understand.

Can I not simply put my SOC 2 report on my website?

That is not advisable. A SOC 2 report contains confidential details about your internal processes, controls and sometimes findings that you do not want to share publicly. On top of that, the report is formally intended for a limited, defined group of users. A SOC 3 report is concise, publicly shareable and written for a broad audience.

Which organisations is a SOC 3 report interesting for?

SOC 3 is particularly interesting for organisations that already invest in security and compliance and want to make this visible to the market. Think of SaaS providers, cloud providers, data centres and other IT service providers that want to emphasise their reliability in quotations, on their website or towards investors. With SOC 3 you show that you set the bar high.

Can SOC 2 and SOC 3 be carried out in one process?

Yes, and that is in fact the most efficient approach. Because SOC 3 is based on the outcomes of a SOC 2 Type II audit, we ideally plan these processes in parallel. You go through one audit process and reporting period, and then receive both an in-depth SOC 2 report for specific stakeholders and a SOC 3 report that you may use more widely.
